Home of the Brave (2006)

After receiving the long-awaited news of their imminent return home in a fortnight, a band of Spokane soldiers find themselves caught in the deadly jaws of an ambush in an Iraqi city. On home soil, we trace the fragmented lives of four survivors - a battle-scarred surgeon who has seen the abyss, a single mother teacher grappling with the loss of her hand, an infantry man mourning his fallen best friend, and a soldier haunted by the ghost of a civilian woman he killed. Each soldier returns home a stranger, their essence altered, grappling with a profound sense of dislocation. The war, ever-present in their minds, is kept alive through group therapy, assistance from the Veterans Affairs, hesitant overtures from loved ones and colleagues, and relentless flashbacks. They are volatile, raw and irritable, their anger simmering just beneath the surface. The poignant question remains: Can a warrior ever truly find solace in the home they once left behind?
