Plot

The Last Samurai is an historical epic that takes place during the Meiji Restoration period of 19th century Japan. Resisting the emperor’s efforts to modernize the country and consolidate power under his name, a group of samurai are in revolt against the new authority. Former American Captain Nathan Algren, who’s still haunted by the atrocities he committed against Native Americans, is hired by a wealthy Japanese businessman to train the new Imperial Army. But after he’s captured by the samurai on a hasty and poorly planned mission, Algren is forced to confront the true nature of the enemy he has been hired to fight.
