Amid the enchanting merriment of Christmas, two fifteen-year-old girls, Kara Gentry and Jessie Wilkins, find themselves on a journey of unexpected discovery and familial bonds. Kara, the granddaughter of wealthy Bob Gentry, is to spend Christmas with the grandparents she's never met due to a long-standing feud with her father, Jeff Gentry. Meanwhile, Jessie, who's been living with her Aunt Jenny since her mother's untimely demise, receives an unexpected invitation from Judy Wilkins, her estranged paternal grandmother. A chance meeting on their flight from Burlington, Vermont to Stillwater, Oklahoma sparks a quick friendship between the girls. Realizing they're both dreading their respective Christmases and heading to the same small town of Guthrie, a spontaneous decision is made. Kara, yearning for a genuine, down-to-earth experience, and Jessie, curious about a lavish lifestyle, decide to switch places. Promising each other it'll only be for a week, with no one getting hurt or caught, they plunge into their new lives, equipped with just the basic details of each other's lives. However, as the week unfolds, the simple deception spirals into a complex web of lies. The girls find themselves increasingly entangled in their false identities, as they develop unexpected emotional connections with their respective 'families'.
