Plot

In the humble folds of South Renford, Alice Adams emerges from a working-class family, her aspirations soaring far beyond their modest means. Fueled by her mother’s discontent with their low social position, despite her father's tireless efforts, Alice yearns for a taste of the opulence of the upper class. She meticulously crafts a façade of wealth and sophisticated charm, but the town's elite easily see through it, leaving her stranded amidst her own falsehoods. Fate intervenes during a grand society ball, where Alice unexpectedly captures the attention of the dashing Arthur Russell, who's rumored to be betrothed to the town's coveted debutante, Mildred Palmer. As their courtship unfolds, Alice struggles to maintain her elaborate pretense, fearful that revealing her true status will drive Arthur away. Simultaneously, Alice's mother relentlessly pressures her father to ascend the social ladder by investing all his hard-earned savings into a precarious business venture. Their desperate bid to join the ranks of the business class threatens to shatter the family's fragile stability and Alice's dreams of happiness with Arthur. As Alice's carefully constructed world teeters on the brink of collapse, can she salvage her budding romance with Arthur, or will her deception bring everything crashing down? Will her father's risky investment pay off or will it plunge the Adams family into deeper despair? Alice Adams spins a tale of ambition, love, and the lengths one will go to escape the confines of their circumstances.
