Plot

As dawn breaks on December 6, 1941, the sky is graced with the formidable silhouette of nine B-17 bombers departing San Francisco, bound for Hawaii. Among the squadron, the Mary Ann takes flight, helmed by the battle-hardened 'Irish' Quincannon. This airborne leviathan is home to a diverse crew, each member sharpened by professionalism, save for Joe Winocki, an aerial gunner whose bitterness is as palpable as the chill of the high altitude. The crew's underlying tensions come into sharp focus as we learn of the bombardier, Tommy McMartin, who finds his heart divided between duty and the safety of his sister in Hawaii. Meanwhile, co-pilot Bill Williams navigates the turbulent waters of affection for the same woman. These personal dramas unfold against the backdrop of a perilous journey, unaware that the colossal storm of war is about to break. As the Mary Ann touches down at Hickam Field on the morning of December 7, the serene Hawaiian skies are shattered by the deafening roar of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Thrust into the maelish chaos, the crew's mettle is tested in the crucible of war, transforming Winocki's bitterness into a resolve as hard as the steel of the bomber he mans. The Mary Ann and her crew are then catapulted into a relentless onslaught of combat missions, from the desperate defense of Wake Island to the deadly skies over the Philippines, and into the heart of the ferocious Battle of the Coral Sea. Each mission paints a vivid tapestry of courage, sacrifice, and survival, but the unforgiving war leaves no room for certainty about who will live to tell their tale.
