Plot

This evocative tale of a Jewish musician struggling to survive in the aftermath of the Nazi invasion of Poland in World War II is based on a 1946 autobiographical book by Władysław Szpilman. It also partially mirrors the director’s own experiences as a child, when he escaped from the Krakow Ghetto and evaded the concentration camps for the duration of the war. The story reveals the depths of human depravity and suffering as Szpilman must cope with the strain and horror of surviving the incomprehensible events of war and genocide. His gifts as a pianist, which served him well in his ideal pre-war life, may be the key to his survival.
