Plot

In the heat of 1973, amidst the controversial desegregation of Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama, emerges Tony Nathan, a remarkably talented black football player. As he steps onto the turf of the predominantly white team, he brings with him a tide of other black players, stirring the waters of a community still grappling with racial tensions. Under the guidance of Coach Tandy Gerelds, the team attempts to channel their collective anger towards unity. Yet, despite his efforts, racial clashes ripple across the football field and spill into the hallways of the school, culminating in a riot that shakes the very foundations of Woodlawn. In the aftermath, Gerelds agrees to an unconventional solution - inviting the roving sports chaplain, Hank Erwin, to address the team. As a motivational speaker, Hank delivers a potent speech that resonates with almost every player, inspiring them to commit their lives to a spiritual journey with Jesus Christ and unite in prayer. Throughout this transformative event, Gerelds remains a sceptic, questioning its significance and grappling with an unexpected journey of his own. Woodlawn is a stirring tale of faith, unity, and the power of shared purpose amidst the chaos of racial discrimination and societal unrest.
