Torn Curtain (1966)

In a high-stakes game of Cold War intrigue, eminent nuclear physicist Professor Michael Armstrong (Paul Newman) finds himself drawn to the heart of East Germany, ostensibly defecting from his American homeland. His reluctant travel companion and assistant, Dr. Sarah Sherman (Dame Julie Andrews), also happens to be his fiancée who is left in the dark about his true intentions. As representatives of the U.S. Interspace Committee, they initially journey to Copenhagen to attend a scientific congress, but a sudden deviation lands them behind the Iron Curtain. Michael's abrupt decision to defect, sparked by the U.S. government's cancellation of his groundbreaking research that could render nuclear warfare obsolete, leaves Sarah torn between her love for him and her loyalty to their country. Unbeknownst to her, Michael's defection is but a ruse, a daring gambit to extract a vital piece of information from the renowned Professor Gustav Lindt (Ludwig Donath) at Karl Marx University in Leipzig. As Michael becomes a minor celebrity in East Germany due to his high-profile defection, the couple's actions attract the watchful eyes of the East German Secret Service.
