In the chilling autumn of 1936, a dark cloud looms over Nazi Germany as the regime ruthlessly purges rebels, sending them to the ominous Westhofen Concentration Camp. Among the oppressed prisoners, seven men - Pelzer, Bellani, Aldinger, Beutler, Fuellgrabe, George Heisler, and their leader Ernst Wallau - dare to defy the odds, hatching a daring escape plan. As their break for freedom unfolds, their absence incites the camp commandant to erect seven menacing crosses, each awaiting the return of an escapee for a grim crucifixion.
Despite the terrifying threat, the embittered George Heisler embarks on a perilous journey towards his hometown, Mainz, alone and devoid of faith in humanity. As he navigates through the treacherous landscape, his fellow escapees fall one by one into the merciless clutches of the German soldiers, their fate sealed on the crosses.
In Mainz, George's hope dwindles further when he discovers his former lover, Leni, is married and refuses to aid him. He stumbles upon the tragic suicide of his comrade Bellani and is gifted clothes and money by a sympathetic Mme. Marelli. But his contact has been arrested by the Gestapo, leaving George with no choice but to seek refuge with his friends - Paul and Liesel Roeder.
As news of George's escape spreads, his friends are eager to help, but his whereabouts remain unknown. In a dangerous game of hide and seek, Paul and his friend Fiedler decide to risk their lives to aid George, leading him to an inn. However, danger lurks even in the most unsuspecting corners as the waitress, Toni, recognises George and the hefty five-thousand-Marc reward on his head.
With six crosses occupied and the seventh ominously awaiting its victim, will George evade the Gestapo and find his freedom, or will he be the final piece completing the grim tableau? The Seventh Cross paints a stark picture of life in Nazi Germany, blending suspense and human drama against the backdrop of a world at war.
