Plot

Austrian mountain climber Heinrich Harrer leaves his pregnant wife behind to prove that he can climb India's Nanga Parbat. His selfish and acerbic demeanor don't endear him to his fellow climbers, but he eventually needs to relent to their caution when a storm comes through. He's then captured by Allied forces and manages to escape with the help of a fellow prisoner of war. The two eventually find themselves in Tibet's Forbidden City. Heinrich's friendship with a young Dalai Lama helps him discover Buddhism and a less egotistical worldview. As China's ambitions to claim Tibet grow, Heinrich struggles to reconcile with the family he left behind.
