Plot

As the Nineteenth Century draws to a close, aristocrat Edward Markham suffers a grave misfortune on the dark continent of Africa – a cruel twist of sorcery that grotesquely disfigures his once noble visage. Spirited back to England by his brother Julian, Edward becomes the tormented captive within the shadowy attic of Markham Manor. In a desperate plea for deliverance, he entreats his lawyer Trench and his accomplice to secretly summon the African sorcerer N'Galo, the only hope for his salvation. However, Julian's iron grip thwarts any attempt at contact, prompting Trench and N'Galo to stage a macabre deception – Edward's death. In the sinister hands of body snatchers, Edward's 'corpse' finds its way to the grimy operating theatre of the unprincipled Dr. Newhartt. Recognising an opportunity, Edward trades a hefty sum for sanctuary, shrouding his monstrous face beneath a blood-red hood. Yet, the quiet town is not ready for the apparition that now walks its cobbled streets, and Edward's hooded figure becomes a magnet for trouble. A chilling wave of murders ensues, sweeping the town into a vortex of fear and suspicion. Finally crossing paths with N'Galo, Edward unravels the chilling truth behind his cursed transformation, igniting a thirst for revenge that culminates in a shocking finale. The Oblong Box weaves a dark tale of voodoo curses, clandestine plots, and horrifying secrets, all lurking beneath the façade of genteel Victorian England.
