In the grim, desolate landscapes of 1865 rural England, we find Katherine, a young 17-year-old maiden. Sold like chattel by her own father, she's ensnared in a loveless marriage to Alexander Lester, a bitter colliery heir, twice her age. The Lester family, as cold and unforgiving as the stone walls of their estate, further imprison Katherine in a joyless existence that seems to stretch into oblivion. But within the monotonous gloom of her life, Katherine discovers an unlikely beacon of hope. Sebastian, a rough-hewn stable groom, emerges from the shadows of the estate; his presence ignites in her a powerful, insatiable desire that had long been suppressed. The two initiate a daring, ill-advised romance, an act of rebellion that shatters the oppressive silence of the Lester household. But, as Katherine soon realizes, the walls of the grand estate bear silent witness to their indiscretions.
