Set against the harsh, untamed beauty of England's Southern coastline in the 1840s, the film Ammonite unravels the story of the lesser-known but prodigious fossil hunter, Mary Anning (portrayed by Kate Winslet). Her glory days of remarkable discoveries are now a distant memory as she trudges through the rough terrains, hunting for ordinary fossils to peddle to vacationers and sustain her sickly mother. When a well-heeled sightseer entrusts the care of his wife, Charlotte Murchison (played by Saoirse Ronan), to Mary, she finds herself in a predicament that her dire financial state doesn't allow her to refuse. The fiercely independent and passionately dedicated Mary finds herself at odds with her uninvited charge at first. However, the friction gives way to an unexpected connection, bridging the chasm between their disparate social standings and contrasting personalities.
