Plot

In the serene heart of the Ukraine, a farming cooperative thrives under the warm sun of June 1941. The murmurs of war echo from their radios, yet the harsh realities seem distant, leaving the inhabitants untouched. As school doors close for the summer, a group of ambitious youth, filled with dreams and aspirations, plan a hiking adventure to Kiev. Among them, top of his class, Damian Terasa Simonov, who's been awarded a scholarship at the State University of Kiev, and his sweetheart, Marina Pavlov. Despite the impending separation, their hearts are entwined with plans of reunion in Kiev, leading to marriage and further education for Marina. The tranquil bubble bursts when Nazi forces invade, shattering the peace with air strikes followed by ground troops. The village is thrust into chaos. A guerrilla army forms in the woods, led by the brave father of Damian and his elder brother, Kolya Simonov, a junior officer in the Soviet air corps. The onslaught finds our young adventurers caught between Kiev and their village, each striving to return, except for Kolya, who is called to his regiment at the airfield. Their journey back takes on greater significance when they cross paths with a mysterious stranger on the road. Back in the village, the Nazis' cruel grip tightens, and the villagers are forced to grapple with their new reality. The de facto leader of the cooperative, Sophia Pavlov, Marina's mother, finds herself a primary target, while her husband has joined the guerrilla forces. Concurrently, a dilemma confronts Dr. Pavel Grigorich Kurin, the village doctor, as he's forced to save the lives of wounded Nazi soldiers, yet grieve for the village children bled dry for Nazi blood transfusions. "The North Star" (1943) is a gripping tale of resilience, courage, and the brutal cost of war. It paints a vivid picture of a peaceful village plunged into turmoil, its inhabitants fueling a desperate fight for survival, while a group of young friends embark on a perilous journey to bring aid to their besieged homeland.
