Within the austere, mountainous regions of the feudal Sunni kingdom in Afghanistan, before the chaos of Soviet invasions, resides a tradition that transcends wealth or military prowess. It's the brutal game of buskashi, a savage form of polo tracing back to the era of Genghis Khan. Here, the status of men and their clans hinges on their victories in this ruthless sport where horse-whips lash against both beast and adversary in a fierce struggle for the 'ball' - a lifeless calf. The game, a grueling test of endurance and will, demands the ball to be carried a daunting distance, a feat near impossible with relentless attacks from rivals.
Amidst this unforgiving landscape, a former champion, Tursen, has ascended to the rank of a village notable, thanks to his role as the stable-keeper for the regional lord, Osman Bey. His crowning glory is the breeding of Jahil, a white stallion of unmatched prowess, perfectly timed for the royal tournament at Bagrami plains, just beyond the capital, Kabul. With age and a crooked leg against him, Tursen entrusts his son, Uraz, with the task of representing their stable. Uraz, fueled by an insatiable pride and a grim desire to pit himself against impossible odds, takes up the mantle.
After vanquishing all local competitors, Uraz sets his sights on Kabul, with the tantalizing prospect of claiming the victorious horse, Jahil, as his own, a prize cherished above life itself. But the journey across the treacherous Hindu Kush mountains is fraught with danger. Uraz, in a tragic turn of events, loses the prize and suffers a grievous leg injury. His stubborn refusal to seek hospital care leads to the onset of gangrene.
His servant, Mokkhi, a humble groom, is coaxed into joining this perilous journey home with the promise of Jahil. But the coveted horse catches the eye of Zareh, a nomadic woman with entrancing allure and deadly ambitions, setting a perilous chain of events into motion...
