Plot

In the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, a chilling legend lurks, casting an eerie shadow over the idyllic landscape. The tale of the Jersey Devil, borne out of a desperate act by Mother Leeds in the 1700s, haunts the woods. Faced with banishment due to her rapidly growing family, Leeds offered her 13th child to the devil, ensuring the survival of her remaining offspring and securing her home. Fast forward to the present day, and we meet the Vineyard family, who venture into the infamous Pine Barrens. The family patriarch, Richard (Stephen Moyer), seeks solace in these woods, intending to release his father's ashes amidst this haunting beauty. However, their tranquil journey is disrupted by whispers of a fresh disappearance, reawakening the chilling legend of the Jersey Devil. Convinced that the mythical creature is responsible, Richard decides to relocate their campsite, hoping to distance his family from the troubled campers. But, little do they know, they are unwittingly drawing closer to the heart of the mystery, plunging them into a predicament far more dangerous than they could have ever anticipated. As the Vineyards grapple with their predicament, they are left to wonder: is the Jersey Devil merely a tale spun from the threads of folklore, or does the creature truly lurk in the shadowy depths of the Barrens? The Barrens (2012) then invites the viewers to navigate this thrilling terrain of fear, suspense, and unsettling folklore, leaving them on the edge of their seats, questioning the boundaries of reality and myth.
