Plot

In the aftermath of World War II, the ruins of Berlin are littered with unexploded bombs, a deadly echo of the conflict just ended. Six German ex-soldiers, led by the pragmatic Karl Wirtz (Jeff Chandler) and the stoic Eric Koertner (Jack Palance), return to their shattered city, no longer as soldiers but as bomb disposal experts. These men, hardened by war and captivity, have chosen to dance with death, defusing the volatile remnants of the Allied forces' fury. Their task is perilous and the pay is high, but the stakes are raised even higher by Wirtz's morbid proposition. Each man is to contribute half of his earnings into a collective fund, a grim lottery where the price of entry is their lives. As each member falls victim to the lethal unpredictability of their work, his share is divided among the survivors. The last man standing, if there is one, will inherit the remainder of this ghastly estate. The constant pressure of their deadly occupation begins to fray the men's nerves, and internal friction ignites. The tension is further stoked by the presence of the captivating Margot Hoefer (Martine Carol), a woman both Wirtz and Koertner find themselves drawn to. As the job nears its end, only Wirtz and Koertner remain, their love for Margot adding fuel to their rivalry. "Ten Seconds to Hell" is a riveting tale of survival, a tense exploration of men teetering on the edge of mortality, their every moment haunted by the threat of sudden obliteration. As they grapple with the monstrous British 1000lb bombs, they must also confront their own fears, desires, and the harsh reality of their precarious existence.
