Plot

In the bustling hub of a railway station, we find Dorian "Dodo" Doubeday (William Tracy), an information clerk armed with an extraordinary photographic memory. With the impending certainty of being drafted into the U.S. Army alongside his prank-loving comrade, Charlie Cobb (Noah Beery, Jr.), "Dodo" devours the pages of army manuals during every spare second. Unlike Charlie, he doesn't anticipate the army life with trepidation but with an eager thirst for knowledge. The duo's military journey leads them to the same basic-training camp as the captivating Jeanne (Elyse Knox), a committed member of the Servicemen Entertainment League. "Dodo's" uncanny ability to memorize data catapults him to the rank of sergeant, triggering resentment among his tough-as-nails peers and the stern regular-army Sergeant William Ames. Determined to expose "Dodo's" perceived incompetence, Sergeant Ames tirelessly works to undermine him in the eyes of Captain Rossmead (Douglas Fowley) and Major Greer (William Gould). However, "Dodo" consistently proves his worth by citing obscure army regulations that validate his unconventional methods. Further complicating "Dodo's" situation, Sergeant Ames orchestrates his assignment as an orderly to the notoriously strict Colonel "Spitfire" Barkley (James Gleason), a man who knows the army regulations inside and out. With the stage set for conflict, one cannot help but wonder whether stormy skies are looming for "Dodo".
