Plot

After three decades of separation, a spontaneous longing to reconnect with her ex-husband Johan, propels Marianne on a journey to his inherited summer house in the serene province of Dalarna. The reunion unfolds on an idyllic autumn day, as Marianne awakens Johan with a gentle kiss, a poignant symbol of their past intimacy. The tranquillity of the rustic retreat is shared with Johan's son Henrik and his daughter Karin, who occupy a neighboring cottage on the property. Still caught in the throes of grief over the loss of his wife, Anna, two years prior, Henrik finds solace in tutoring his daughter in cello, envisaging a promising future for her in a renowned European music school. However, the seemingly harmonious father-daughter bond hides an unsettling, incestuous relationship, adding another layer of complexity to the family dynamics. As Marianne delves deeper into their lives, she uncovers the strained relationship between the father and son, and the disturbing bond between Henrik and Karin. She soon finds herself entangled in a distressing power struggle that belies the peaceful exterior of the family. The presence of Anna, although physically absent, lingers like a haunting melody, underscoring the profound grief and unresolved tensions that permeate the family. As the autumn leaves fall, the idyllic setting becomes a silent witness to the unfolding drama, as Marianne grapples with the disturbing revelations and the intricate web of relationships, exploring the darker depths of familial bonds and the enduring scars of the past.
