Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Christian is a romantic, impoverished writer living in Paris in 1899. He surrounds himself with bohemians, including the painter Toulouse-Lautrec, and falls in love with the star of the Moulin Rouge nightclub, Satine. Cynical and worldly, Satine initially rebuffs his advances but then is charmed by his guileless adoration. However, the club needs its patron, the Duke, and the Duke will only keep paying if Satine loves him. Against this backdrop and as her feelings for Christian grow, Satine is keeping a tragic secret.
