Mutants — humans that have evolved to develop extraordinary superpowers that typically manifest at puberty — are largely feared and hated by humanity, but telepath Charles Xavier sees a hope for a future where mutants and humans get along in peace. He's gathered together a group of the most promising young mutants to train them in the use of their powers and serve as an example of good for humanity. But recognition doesn't come quick, and many of the students struggle with what the right way forward is. At the same time, sinister shapeshifter Mystique has infiltrated the school in search of recruits for a war against humans.
