Chinatown (1974)

Jake Gittes is a private investigator hired by a woman who says she is named Evelyn Mulwray to investigate her husband in Los Angeles in 1937. The woman claims she thinks her husband is having an affair, but before long, the actual Mrs. Mulwray has turned up, and it isn't the woman who hired Gittes. Meanwhile, he begins uncovering a vast web of corruption involving water use and government officials, and it seems that some people will stop at nothing to make sure no one finds out what he has learned.
