Plot

In the dawn of the twentieth century, a sprightly preteen named Pollyanna Whittier (Hayley Mills), daughter of former missionaries and a minister, is swept from her humble church life into the affluent world of her stern, spinster aunt, Polly Harrington (Jane Wyman). Plucked from her familiar surroundings following her parents' demise, Pollyanna lands in the heart of Harrington, a town dominated by her aunt's iron rule and the Harrington family's influential legacy. Polly Harrington, a woman of intimidating power, navigates the town with an unyielding grip, wielding her family's clout to control the smallest aspects of the community's life. Her influence extends from the town's commerce to the church's fire and brimstone sermons, and even dictates the private affairs of her personal assistant, Nancy Furman (Nancy Olson). Her realm of control does not exclude the young Pollyanna, whom she shelters more out of a sense of obligation than genuine affection. In sharp contrast to her aunt's domineering nature, Pollyanna is a beacon of optimism and kindness. Guided by her late father's teachings, she embarks on a quest to unearth the goodness hidden within the town and its most disliked inhabitants, the reclusive Mr. Pendergast (Adolphe Menjou) and the morose Mrs. Snow (Agnes Moorehead). However, Pollyanna's greatest challenge is to penetrate her Aunt Polly's hardened exterior and rekindle the warmth buried deep within her. As the tale unfolds, Pollyanna's indomitable spirit and infectious optimism seep into the very fabric of Harrington, inciting a wave of transformation. With the aid of Mayor Warren's nephew, Dr. Edmond Chilton (Richard Egan), who harbors a past connection with Aunt Polly, Pollyanna strives to mend the town's deep-seated feuds and instill a newfound sense of unity. Within the grim shadows of the town's conflicts and her aunt's intimidating rule, Pollyanna kindles a spark of hope, proving that even the darkest situation can be illuminated by the light of positivity.
