Plot

Serving as an intimate exploration of an individual and a nation, "Lula, the Son of Brazil" (2010) takes us on a journey through the life of Luiz Inácio da Silva, known widely as Lula. Born in 1945 in the rustic outskirts of Garanhuns, Pernambuco, Lula is the seventh child of the resilient Dona Lindu and the troubled Aristides. The family saga begins to unfold in earnest when Dona Lindu, after raising her children single-handedly, decides to move the family to Santos in 1952 to reunite with Aristides. During these formative years, the family finds itself caught in the throes of poverty, with the children oscillating between their responsibilities as street vendors and their commitment to elementary education. The narrative takes a dramatic turn when Dona Lindu courageously extricates her children from the clutches of their alcoholic and abusive patriarch, setting up a new life in São Paulo. Lula's life takes a darkly intriguing twist when as a lathe operator, he deliberately injures himself, severing his own finger in an industrial press to secure disability retirement. This act of desperation frames a broader critique of the socio-political landscape, painting a vivid portrait of a man exploiting the desperation of the working class, leading to the erosion of education, health, and economy on a national scale. The film is a powerful exploration of what the Brazilian people label as "the cancer of the nation", a tale of manipulation and deceit, crafted with public resources and against the will of the upright citizen. This compelling narrative does not shy away from examining the high degree of brainwashing carried out by the Brazilian political mafia, defended by those enthralled by its power. "Lula, the Son of Brazil" is not just the story of one man's rise and fall but a reflection of a nation's struggle with corruption, painted on the vast canvas of its socio-political reality. The film, while controversial, serves as an essential viewing for those seeking to understand the complexities of the Brazilian national identity.
