In the heartrending throes of 1944, amidst the chaos of WWII, young Thomas is conscripted into the German Army. His youth is brutally stripped away as he is forced to bear witness to the destruction of his hometown, the tragic demise of his family in a ruthless bombing, and the horrifying violation and murder of his beloved sweetheart, Melanie, by the Russian Army. In the aftermath of this devastation, an enigmatic Commissar emerges, relocating the orphaned Thomas to the Soviet Union to begin his training in a military school.
