Paths of Glory (1957)

The futility and nightmarish landscapes of World War I are explored in this vision of officer incompetence and unnecessary violence on the European front. The French and Germans have long been entrenched on opposite sides with neither side making much ground but both taking steady casualties. General George Broulard sees an opportunity by laying siege to a nearby German fort, but nearly everyone sees it as an act of suicide. It's as much an act of bureaucratic incompetence as anything, and a small group of soldiers will have to fight back if they want to prevent the wholesale slaughter of their brothers.
