Plot
Enveloped in a cloak of jealousy, Louise navigates her life in the shadow of her twin sister, Caroline. Despite being older by a few precious minutes, Louise finds herself in the role of Esau, overlooked and underappreciated, while Caroline, much like Jacob, basks in the family's adoration. Caroline, a blonde angel with a voice as mesmerizing as a siren's song, is the embodiment of self-centeredness. Meanwhile, Louise, the unsung heroine, toils unnoticed. Her brunette hair is as unremarkable as the life she leads, diligently crabbing and oystering on their Chesapeake Bay island, her earnings silently funding Caroline's vocal aspirations.
In the year spanning the Christmases of 1941 and 1942, Louise's seventeenth year, her life takes an unexpected turn. A seasoned sea captain, who himself has weathered storms of resentment and wrath, becomes her unlikely ally. Together, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, as Louise learns to rise above her bitterness. She must sift through the debris of her jealousy, to unearth her desires, her passions, and to ultimately understand what it is that she truly loves. The tale of Jacob Have I Loved is a poignant exploration of sibling rivalry, self-discovery, and the arduous journey towards self-love.
