Plot

In the literary world of San Francisco, Frances Mayes is a respected professor, reviewer, and author, wrestling to pen her latest book. Her seemingly idyllic life spirals into chaos when her husband blindsides her with a divorce, intending to marry his mistress. Despite Frances having financially supported his book writing journey, he audaciously demands alimony, leaving Frances on shaky financial ground while also claiming their house. In the midst of this turmoil, Frances finds a lifeline in her best friend Patti's unusual offer - a vacation intended for Patti and her partner Grace: a gay tour of Tuscany. Patti, pregnant and unable to travel herself, believes this unexpected gift could provide Frances the necessary escape to heal from her emotional wounds. Enveloped by the charm of Tuscany, Frances impulsively severs her ties with the tour and purchases a dilapidated villa, a decision that sets her on a path of restoration, not just of the villa, but of her own life. She finds herself navigating numerous challenges in her new environment, hoping to carve out a happy life that includes the rekindling of romantic love. Guided by the wisdom of her sympathetic real estate agent, Signor Martini, Frances dreams of infusing her life with the vibrancy she envisions for the villa. Martini shares a tale of a railway laid between Vienna and Venice before a train existed to traverse it, symbolizing Frances's own journey of rebuilding before the arrival of love. Assembling a colorful crew of locals and immigrants, Frances embarks on a year-long mission to restore the villa. Her journey intertwines with her San Francisco friend who, pregnant and at a crossroads, seeks solace under the Tuscan sun. Frances's pursuit of love initially leads her to her married real estate agent, then to a captivating stranger. While life's complexities often hinder her romantic endeavors, Frances discovers that wishes can be fulfilled in the most unforeseen ways. Amidst the trials and tribulations, the Tuscan sun continues to bathe her world, casting a warm glow on her unexpected journey of self-discovery.
