Plot

Amidst the backdrop of World War II, on a tiny, sun-soaked island in the vast South Pacific, lies an unusual outpost of the U.S. Navy's Public Relations department. Here, sea duty is considered the harshest of punishments, a sentiment echoed by the blissfully unaware Commanding Officer. Second in command, Lt. Max Siegal, a clever and resourceful officer, spends his days not in the thrill of battle, but navigating the equally challenging waters of office politics and island romance. Siegal's multifaceted mission includes keeping the curious foreign correspondents satisfied, averting potential blunders from his clueless Commander, and orchestrating an enlisted sailor's pursuit of his dream woman - a striking, off-limits Lieutenant. Amidst the chaos, Siegal himself becomes entangled in a romantic dalliance, endeavouring to convince a certain island schoolteacher of his affections. This is a tale of love, duty and diversion, as the navy personnel pass their time caught between the allure of native girls, the charm of stationed nurses, and the looming dread of frontline sea duty. "Don't Go Near the Water" (1957) adroitly weaves together elements of war, romance, and comedy, creating a vibrant tapestry of life away from the home front, where the battles are of a different, albeit equally challenging, kind.
