Plot

In the throbbing heart of 1931 Berlin, Christopher Isherwood, a promising young author, finds himself drawn to the city's vibrant and unapologetic gay scene. Invited by his close friend W. H. Auden, Isherwood dives headfirst into this intoxicating world, taking up work as an English teacher to fund his explorations. His eccentric flatmates include Gerald Hamilton, an ageing queen with a penchant for wigs, and Jean Ross, an aspiring actress with a voice that could curdle milk, yet who holds the stage of a tumbledown cabaret club. Isherwood's encounters and experiences with them and others, feed into the rich tapestry of his emerging stories. Isherwood's life takes a dramatic turn when he becomes entangled with Caspar, a handsome rent boy. However, his heart is truly captured by Heinz, a humble street sweeper. Isherwood finds himself drawn into Heinz's world, paying for the medical treatment of Heinz's ailing mother, much to the displeasure of Heinz's Nazi-sympathizing brother, Gerhardt. As the ominous shadow of Fascism looms over Berlin, Isherwood and Heinz escape to London. But the relentless grasp of bureaucracy threatens their happiness, and Heinz is forced to return to Germany when his visa expires. Isherwood, now a celebrated author, returns to Berlin years later for a bittersweet reunion with Heinz, who now leads a conventional life as a husband and father.
