Plot

In the turbulent depths of naval hierarchy, Lieutenant Commander Tom Dodge (Grammer) exists as a seasoned underdog, repeatedly overlooked by the selection committee despite his second-in-command status aboard the nuclear powerhouse, the USS Orlando. His unconventional methods and non-conformist approach to command raise eyebrows, yet fail to secure him a command of his own. This all changes when Rear Admiral Graham (Den), despite his fervent attempts to sway the committee, fails to prevent Dodge's assignment to the rusted glory of the USS Stingray - the only diesel submarine in the US Fleet. Recommissioned and ready for revival, the Stingray becomes Dodge's proving ground. His inaugural orders: to cleanse the relic of its decay and embark on a high-stakes war game. Yet, the challenge is not only the antiquated sub but also the motley crew of misfits that Graham has scraped together for him. Among these unconventional seafarers, Dodge must navigate the treacherous waters of leadership and teamwork. Pitted against the atomic titan, the USS Orlando, Dodge's mission is to obliterate a dummy battleship. But the stakes are higher than they seem. A deal is struck with Vice Admiral Winslow (Torn); victory in the war game will earn Dodge a long-coveted command of a nuclear submarine. Down Periscope (1996) dives into the depths of military politics, unconventional heroism, and the undying spirit of the underdogs, painting a thrilling picture of naval warfare and the trials of command. With a crew of oddballs, an aging submarine, and a ticking clock, Dodge must turn his improbable odds into an unforgettable triumph.
