Plot

Set against the backdrop of Japan's tumultuous transition from the opulent Genroku Era to the austere Kyocho Era in the early 18th century, "After the Rain" paints a vivid picture of Ihei Misawa, a ronin - a samurai without a master - and his tender-hearted wife, Tayo. Stranded by relentless rains at a humble country inn, the pair find themselves amid destitute travelers, their journeys halted by a swollen, impassable river. Unbeknownst to his wife, Ihei Misawa, played by Akira Terao, steps into a local dojo, his expert swordsmanship pitted against local warriors. His victories bring not just monetary rewards, but also a chance to transform the gloomy atmosphere of the inn. With the earned sum, he purchases food and sake, spreading warmth and happiness among the starving guests with his magnanimity and jovial spirit. When the rains finally abate, an encounter with the feudal landlord, Lord Nagai Izuminokami Shigeaki, played by Shiro Mifune, brings a glimmer of hope. Recognizing Ihei's exceptional fencing skills, Lord Shigeaki invites him to become his warriors' chief fencing instructor. But Ihei's undeniable talent stirs a storm of jealousy and pride within the castle walls, jeopardizing his newfound position. In the face of this turmoil, Tayo, portrayed by Yoshiko Miyazaki, steps forth with her heartening perspective. Her optimistic outlook and heartfelt understanding of the happenings offer a serene counterpoint to Ihei's turbulent journey. "After the Rain" is a poignant tale of resilience, patience, and the simple joys of life that can brighten even the most trying times.
