In the politically-charged landscape of Kinjanja, a West African nation teetering on the edge of conflict with English imperialists, the hedonistic British diplomat Morgan Leafy (Colin Friels) finds himself embroiled in a scandal of epic proportions. His illicit liaison with Celia (Joanne Whalley-Kilmer), the wife of the corrupt aspiring President Sam Adekunle (Louis Gossett, Jr.), pushes him into a precarious situation that demands cunning and guile. Leafy's punishment? Coerce the singular official opposing a lucrative project that could fill Adekunle's coffers. The task seems simple, until Leafy discovers the official is none other than the unshakeable pillar of Kinjanjan integrity, Dr. Alex Murray (Sir Sean Connery). Treading a labyrinth of deceit and manipulation, Leafy must also navigate the idiosyncrasies of his pompous superior, Fanshawe (John Lithgow), the amorous advances of Fanshawe's wife, Chloe (Dame Diana Rigg), and their stunningly affable daughter.
