Plot

Waterberry Tears is a heart-wrenching tale of identity, love, and acceptance set amidst the grape fields and trailer homes of California's Coachella Valley. It trails the life of Goyo, a gay teenager coming of age in a Mexican immigrant family, as he grapples with the struggle of concealing his true identity from his father, Ramon, all the while yearning for his acceptance. Ramon, a stern Mexican immigrant, vehemently opposes homosexuality, unable to reconcile with the reality that his only son is gay. He maintains a harsh demeanor, resorting to physical and verbal abuse, creating a storm of tension within the family. The plot thickens as Goyo and his twin sister, Rosa, both find themselves drawn to the ruggedly attractive Lucio, spiraling the family further into turmoil. The film beautifully captures Goyo's life as he finds solace in a small circle of friends and his next-door neighbor. It poignantly sheds light on his internal conflict – torn between the stark reality of his family's expectations and his own inherent identity. In this journey of self-discovery, Waterberry Tears explores the impact of outdated traditions and societal norms, leading to unexpected bonds within a family and community. Featuring a cast of local non-professional actors, this gut-wrenching drama provides an authentic glimpse into the lives of immigrant families in the USA. As the narrative unfolds, Waterberry Tears doesn't shy away from the emotional reality of immigrant workers, painting a vivid picture of their struggles and hopes, making for an immersive, thought-provoking cinematic experience.
