Plot

Amidst the serenity of a French Alpine village, Being 17 unravels a tale of unexpected kinship and burgeoning love. Damien Delille, a model student and the son of a frequently absent French army rescue helicopter pilot, Nathan Delille, finds his peaceful existence marred by the relentless bullying of his classmate, Thomas Chardoul. Thomas, the adopted son of humble cattle farmers, is grappling with the distress of his mother's ailing health and a household steeped in worry. Under the tutelage of his veteran neighbor, Paolo, Damien learns the essence of self-defense, a skill necessitated by Thomas's persistent hostility. Their school's principal, recognizing the relentless conflict yet misunderstanding the victim, reprimands both boys equally, inadvertently weaving their fates closer together. In a surprising twist of events, Damien's mother, Dr. Marianne Delille, welcomes Thomas into their home, upon discovering his mother's pregnancy. A forced cohabitation ensues, stirring a sea of complex emotions as the duo oscillates between feigned friendship and clandestine confrontations. Yet, amidst their shared turmoil, the boys find an unexpected bond born from shared secrets and silent confidences. Damien, grappling with his emerging sexuality, finds his academic performance faltering as he develops a profound crush on Thomas. Meanwhile, Thomas, under the influence of Damien's mother's tutelage, ascends to the status of a class champion, leaving their earlier conflicts looking irrelevant. Their relationship takes a transformative turn when a family tragedy strikes, pulling them back together in a more intimate fashion. Being 17 is a powerful exploration of adolescence, a journey from antagonism to affection, and a testament to the surprising alliances life can forge. This poignant narrative unravels the complexities of navigating identity, friendship, and love in the throes of youth.
