Trikal (1985)

In the heart of post-independent India, circa 1961, lies the vibrant, Portuguese-occupied Goa, home to the affluent Souzasoares family. The matriarch, Dona Maria Souzasoares, presides over a diverse household that includes her husband Ernesto, their daughter Silvia, her husband Lucio, and their daughters Aurora and Anna. Adding a pinch of intrigue and mystery to their lives is Milagrenia, the illegitimate daughter of Ernesto, born from one of his many dalliances with the maidservants. When Ernesto exits the world, Maria, drowning in grief, seeks solace in the spiritual. With Milagrenia's assistance, she attempts to communicate with Ernesto's spirit. However, they inadvertently awaken the angry ghost of Vijay Singh Rane, a man beheaded on the command of Ernesto's grandfather, stirring an undercurrent of tension in the household. The narrative is further entwined with the impending marriage of Anna to the promising medical student, Erasmo. Silvia is impatient for the wedding, fearing the loss of Erasmo if delayed. Yet, their lives are thrown into chaos when they discover both Anna and Milagrenia are with child. Anna's suitors—Erasmo, Ruiz Pereira, the nephew of Dr. Pereira, and Leon Gonsalves, a freedom fighter on the run—become potential fathers, while the identity of the man behind Milagrenia's condition remains shrouded in mystery. As the family grapples with these revelations, the backdrop of Goa teems with unrest, with Indian troops blockading the region to oust the Portuguese. The tale, narrated from the perspective of a family friend, unfolds, exploring how the Souzasoares navigate through these turbulent times.
