Tough Guys Don't Dance (1987)

In the shadowy world of Provincetown, Tim Madden, a tormented writer and former convict with an unrestrained affection for the bottle, veers into a nightmarish reality. Awakening from a two-week alcohol-induced haze, he's met with a scene straight out of a gory thriller - a pool of blood in his car, a blond woman's severed head stashed among his marijuana, and his ex-lover, Madeleine, entwined with the town's new police chief, Captain Luther Regency. Haunted by blackouts and a past riddled with sin, Madden plunges into the mystery, guided by his cancer-stricken father, Dougy. Yet, the enigmatic Captain Regency, bearing a grudge against Madden due to a car crash that robbed Madeleine of her fertility, is constantly at his heels. As Madden sifts through his fragmented memories, he recalls a reckless adventure, where he and Madeleine experiment with a couple from the South, Big Stoop and his wife, Patty Lareine. The journey back triggers the disastrous car crash, a consequence of Madeleine's jealousy over Madden's fascination with Patty Lareine. Every person in Madden's life becomes a potential suspect, including his ex-wife Patty Lareine, affluent childhood friend Wardley Meeks III, and even Madden himself. Patty Lareine, after a series of tumultuous relationships and a profitable divorce, had married Madden. However, following her sudden disappearance and a mysterious letter from Madeleine, Madden spirals back into his destructive bender, shattering his memory. Fragments of memories resurface, like those of his encounter with the blonde porn star Jessica Pond, whose decapitated head was found in his marijuana stash. As more heads appear and more people go missing, it becomes clear that a massive marijuana deal involving Patty Lareine, Wardley, Jessica Pond, and her effeminate husband Lonnie Pangborn, is at the heart of this murder mystery. As the forces of doom close in, Madden must decode the mystery, reclaim his manhood, and save himself from another prison sentence. But with an ancient witch trial and the repugnant misfits of the town's outskirts inexplicably woven into the mystery, will he manage to stay afloat? As Dougy warns him, "Tough guys don't dance," and Madden has been doing everything but the Charleston in his desperate attempt to survive. Will he untangle the twisted mystery and salvage his crumbling life?
