Plot

Within the hallowed halls of a Madrid film school, a young communication sciences graduate, Ángela, finds herself both drawn to and disturbed by the magnetism of violence. As she delves into a controversial thesis on the exploitation of brutality in visual media, her search for the grotesque and horrifying leads her into the university's forgotten audiovisual archives. Amongst the dusty relics of the past, Ángela stumbles upon a chilling discovery - a videotape that seems to epitomize the darkest corners of underground cinema; a snuff film that repels her with its sickening authenticity. The movie's protagonist is not a mere character, but a real victim, a girl whose life was brutally snuffed out before the camera's unblinking eye. As the echoes of this grisly discovery reverberate through the faculty, casting a shadow of fear and intrigue, Ángela realizes the girl was a former student of their very institution. The line between her academic pursuit and personal peril blurs as she suspects she might be the next target. Her only ally in this macabre journey is Chema - a fellow student with an unquenchable obsession for gore-filled cinema. Together, they are swept into a dark labyrinth, seeking answers to questions that society shies away from. Can violence be justified as a spectacle? Where do we draw the line in the representation of death and suffering? And most importantly, can a murder ever be made to look good on video? In this unsettling exploration of our fascination with violence, Thesis (1996) forces us to confront the uncomfortable truth hidden in the darkest recesses of our voyeuristic tendencies.
