Plot

In the heartland of Kindle County, Illinois, Rozat "Rusty" Sabich, a man of law and order, stands as the Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. His life is a delicate blend of professional ambitions and personal complexities, as his wife Barbara struggles to finish her long-standing Ph.D. dissertation in Mathematics while applying for a teaching position. Their marriage is a supportive sanctuary, weathering the storm of Rusty's past infidelity with his ambitious colleague, Carolyn Polhemus, an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney. This secret affair, hidden from the public eye and professional circles, continues to cast a shadow over their lives. The tides turn dramatically when Carolyn is found brutally murdered in her apartment, a crime that appears to be a violent rape and strangulation. The absence of forced entry suggests the killer was someone intimately known to her. The case lands in the hands of Rusty's boss and mentor, Chief Prosecuting Attorney Raymond Horgan, who is caught in the throes of a challenging reelection campaign. Sensing an opportunity to boost his chances of reelection, Horgan assigns Rusty to the case, igniting a dangerous dance of conflict and intrigue. Rusty tiptoes around the investigation, desperately trying to protect his family from the fallout of his past affair while wrestling with the looming spectre of his own guilt. His efforts to bury the truth, however, backfire disastrously, with collected evidence pointing to him as the main suspect in Carolyn's murder. The tables turn, and Rusty finds himself on trial for a murder he may or may not have committed, with Sandy Stern, a once formidable adversary, as his only ally. As the courtroom drama unfolds, the characters grapple with their own interests, often disregarding the truth. Rusty's former lover's murder transforms into a sinister plot of political ambition, betrayal, and personal vendetta, casting doubt on Rusty's innocence. Amidst the tumultuous trial, a pressing question arises: will the real murderer ever be unmasked, or will the truth become the first casualty in this lethal game of power and deceit?
