In the heart of New York City, Kate Miller, a middle-aged housewife trapped in a cage of sexual dissatisfaction, finds herself lost in a risqué fantasy during a mundane morning shower, while her husband shaves indifferently at the sink nearby. As the day unfolds, she seeks solace in her psychiatrist, Dr. Robert Elliott, baring her frustrations about her husband's lackluster performance between the sheets. A chance encounter at a museum leads her into the arms of a stranger, igniting an adulterous affair that spills from a taxi cab to his apartment.
