Plot

In the heart of the action-packed movie, The Thundering Mantis (1980), we meet Ah Chi (Ka-Yan Leung), a martial arts enthusiast whose antics often lead him into a whirlwind of trouble. His life takes a drastic turn when he stands up to a brutal thug, who happens to be an enforcer for the infamous tong boss Hsia (Eddie Ko) of the dreaded Jade Brotherhood. This act triggers a chain of events where Ah Chi's master is forced to expel him, leaving him masterless and working for a humble fish vendor. Destiny introduces Ah Chi to a cunning youngster (Yat Lung Wong), whose uncle Chow Tung (Simon Yuen) is a revered master of the Insane Mantis style. Despite the old man's initial reluctance to share his exceptional technique, Ah Chi's relentless spirit and surreptitious learning spark a change of heart in Master Chow. This follows a brutal encounter with Hsia's cohorts, prompting the old man to take Chi under his wing, embarking on a rigorous journey of mastering the Insane Mantis style with unmatched acrobatic precision. However, Ah Chi's world shatters when Hsia's henchmen ruthlessly eliminate both the fish vendor and his newly-found master. The tragic turn of events pushes Ah Chi to the brink of insanity. Mimicking the behavior of a praying mantis, he channels his deep-seated fury into a cannibalistic frenzy, setting his sights on the head of the Jade Brotherhood himself. As Ah Chi steps into the eye of the storm, the film promises a heart-stopping face-off, teetering on the edge of madness and vengeance.
