The Tenth Man (1988)

In the heart of the grim Nazi occupation, a tale of sacrifice, deceit, and unexpected love unravels. The Tenth Man, a poignant adaptation of Graham Greene's novel, introduces us to the French advocate Chavel (Sir Anthony Hopkins). Chavel, imprisoned by the Germans, bartered his wealth for his life with a fellow inmate, who took his place in front of the merciless firing squad. At the war's twilight, our protagonist, shrouded in the identity of his deceased cellmate, returns to his former residence, now inhabited by the stoically bitter Therese (Dame Kristin Scott Thomas). She is the sister of the sacrificial prisoner and awaits the return of the man indirectly responsible for her brother's death. Under his assumed identity, Chavel is welcomed into the home as a caretaker. His new role is twofold: maintain the grounds and identify the real Chavel if he dares to reappear. As time ebbs away, Chavel and Therese's relationship, initially marked by tension and mistrust, blossoms into an unlikely romance. Their newfound tranquility, however, is soon disrupted by the arrival of a stranger (Sir Derek Jacobi) proclaiming himself to be Chavel. Caught in a web of deception and burgeoning love, Chavel must navigate the perilous path of unmasking the pretender's true identity while keeping his own a secret. He is driven by his affection for Therese and the desperate need to preserve their relationship. The Tenth Man weaves a gripping narrative of redemption, love, and the haunting echoes of past choices, set against the backdrop of a world at war.
