Plot

In the aftermath of the Korean War, decorated US Army Captain Edward "Ed" Hall, Jr. finds himself journeying back home to San Francisco, a return journey shared by numerous war heroes and captives, each bearing the scars of their experiences from years spent in enemy prison camps. Ed, the son of respected Colonel Edward Hall Sr., bears the weight of his younger brother Pete's death in battle. Pete's widow, Aggie, is torn between her love for her brother-in-law and her grief for her husband. Ed, who has valiantly served in two wars, has amassed an impressive service record, earning him a silver star cluster and a letter of commendation. His father's pride, however, is shattered when Ed is charged with collaborating with the enemy during his two-year-long captivity. This abrupt revelation makes the Colonel question his son's loyalty, even as Ed privately confesses his guilt to his appointed lawyer, Lt. Col. Frank Wasnick. Torn between his sense of duty and the unbearable realities of war, Ed's ordeal now revolves around the impending court-martial. His guilt or innocence is not as simple as it appears, particularly when his prison camp was a living hell that challenged his very understanding of loyalty and survival. As Ed grapples with the will to fight his charges, the question becomes not solely about his innocence, but whether he can articulate the harrowing circumstances that led to his actions. His fight is not just to convince the court of his justifications, but also to reclaim the faith of his father, the Colonel, and illustrate the blurred line between treason and survival in the face of war's unfathomable atrocities.
