Plot

In the chilling aftermath of the Korean War, Staff Sergeant Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey) finds himself in the unenviable spotlight as the sole Medal of Honor recipient amongst seventy-seven U.S. servicemen. His remarkable accolade, awarded for saving nine of his battalion members, is a powerful tool in the hands of his ambitious mother, Mrs. Eleanor Shaw Iselin (Dame Angela Lansbury), who seeks to exploit Raymond's newfound fame to bolster her husband's political aspirations. Raymond's stepfather, Senator John Yerkes Iselin (James Gregory), although viewed as a political buffoon, has managed to carve out a niche for himself with his vehement anti-Communist rhetoric. Raymond, a reluctant hero repulsed by his manipulative mother and stepfather, retreats into a job in New York City, serving as a confidential assistant to the political journalist Holborn Gaines (Lloyd Corrigan). Simultaneously, Major Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra), Raymond's commanding officer and the man who recommended him for the medal, battles disturbing nightmares back in Washington, D.C. His dreams are filled with sinister echoes of a seemingly harmless New Jersey women's gardening club meeting, intertwined with the specter of Raymond Shaw. As Marco grapples with his subconscious, he becomes aware of a deep-rooted compulsion to praise Raymond, a man he knows to be unlikable and unloved. Except for one brief, doomed romance with Jocelyn Jordan (Leslie Parrish), the daughter of a Democratic Senator whom Mrs. Iselin violently disapproved of, Raymond admits to having never loved or been loved. This disconnect between Marco's feelings and his actions deepens his unease, ultimately leading him to discover that he's not alone. Other survivors of their unit are plagued by eerily similar dreams. Haunted by this revelation, Marco resolves to unravel the mystery, a decision that drags him into Raymond's world. He soon witnesses unsettling behavior in Raymond and stumbles upon a startling conspiracy against the United States. As the nightmare and reality begin to merge, Marco is drawn into a sinister web of manipulation and intrigue, where Raymond Shaw is the enigmatic epicenter.
