Plot

"The Last Princess" masterfully constructs a drama and action hybrid narrative set against the backdrop of the life of Princess Deok-hye (1912-1989). As the youngest and only daughter of the final King of Jo-seon, ex-Emperor Gojong, and his beloved concubine Yang Gui-in, her life was an interwoven tapestry of joy and sorrow. Born into Korea's final royal lineage in 1912, her existence was marred by unspeakable tragedy and manipulated by the sinister machinations of the Japanese Imperial family and their Korean accomplices for political gains. Two years prior to her birth, the ominous shadow of Japanese Imperial Army loomed over Gwang-bok-gong Palace. The palace fell to the might of Japan, coerced into approving Korea's annexation to the Empire. Her world shattered with her father's sudden death in 1919, allegedly a poison plot by the occupying Japanese. This sparked a chain of events that led to the young Princess Deokye's forced departure from Korea for an education in Japan, marking the beginning of a ceaseless cycle of despair, shattered dreams and deep sorrow. Her longing for return finally found fulfillment after thirty-seven years in 1962. The narrative skillfully integrates elements from Kwon Bi-young's 2009 novel, introducing fictional characters that enhance the tale's dramatic depth and emotional intensity. Princess Deokhye's later years unfold within the confines of Chang-deok Palace, her life painting a poignant portrait of resilience until her demise in 1989. Her final resting place is at Hong-ryu-reung, just outside of Seoul. "The Last Princess" is an unforgettable journey through history, personal struggle, and the relentless human spirit.
