In the poverty-stricken corners of Harlem, New York, Sol Nazerman presides over a pawnshop, his emotionless demeanor an effective tool in bartering with his desperate customers. This seemingly impenetrable fortress of a man, once a respected professor, is a survivor of Auschwitz who carries the haunting memories of his wife's violation and the brutal extermination of his family by the Nazis. Every street corner of Harlem serves as a stark reminder of his horrific past, forcing him to shut off his emotions to survive the torment of his memories. Nazerman's solitary world takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of Jesus Ortiz, a young man with a history of petty crime, who sees his job at the pawnshop and his association with Nazerman as a path to redemption. Simultaneously, the neighborhood's new welfare worker, Marilyn Birchfield, suspects Sol's traumatic past and attempts to pierce his hardened exterior, driven by her own undisclosed motives.
