1992 Los Angeles is torn apart by riots. It is against this tumultuous backdrop that a young teacher named Erin begins working with disadvantaged students. The students divide themselves into racial cliques. Erin struggles to integrate them at first. The class starts to come together when she gives them each a diary where they can write whatever they want.
