In the bustling heart of New York City, history student and marathon runner, Thomas "Babe" Levy, lives in the shadow of his father's tragic suicide - a casualty of the McCarthy-era witch hunts. His brother, Doc, an enigmatic oil tycoon, urges Babe to step out of their father's ghostly footprints and chart his own course. Soon, Babe finds himself entangled in an unexpected romance with Elsa Opel, a foreign exchange student with a shared passion for history. However, their budding connection is disrupted by an inexplicably sophisticated mugging in the eerie quiet of Central Park. This seemingly random incident spirals into a sinister conspiracy, pulling Babe into a cataclysmic whirlwind of deceit, murder, and secrets. He learns that those closest to him have been concealing their true identities, and he is unwillingly entangled in the malevolent schemes of Christian Szell, a Nazi war criminal in hiding. The plot thickens as Szell, armed with the grim instruments of his former dental trade, resorts to torture, believing Babe possesses crucial intelligence.
