Plot

In the quiet city of Groningen, the unassuming Kees Popinga, a dutiful family man and chief clerk at the venerable Julius de Koster and Sons, has lived a life characterized by meticulous bookkeeping and an unshakable reputation. Popinga's world is confined within the walls of his office, and his dreams are bound by the allure of trains, those majestic carriers to far-off, exotic locations. His existence, as predictable as the arrival of the next train, is shattered when he stumbles upon a shocking truth — his trusted boss, Julius de Koster, Jr., has been plundering the company's coffers to finance his infatuation with a mysterious Parisian woman, Michèle Rozier. With the revelation of de Koster's deceit and the company teetering on the brink of financial ruin, Popinga's mundane life is derailed. Seizing the remaining company funds and a train ticket tucked away in a briefcase, Popinga embarks on a journey to Paris, chasing the life he had only dared to dream of and the woman who lured his boss into ruin. However, the romanticized adventure he envisioned is far from reality. Michèle, who was merely playing a role to de Koster for the sake of money, sees Popinga's advances as a joke until she discovers his loot. Meanwhile, Inspector Lucas of the Paris police is hot on Popinga's trail, his suspicions aroused by the sudden influx of Dutch currency in the city. As Popinga navigates the treacherous waters of deception and crime, Lucas races against time, fearing that the meek clerk may be driven to commit acts much darker than theft. The Man Who Watched Trains Go By is a thrilling ride that captures the unraveling of a man's life, his descent into a world of crime, and a relentless pursuit to apprehend him before it's too late.
