In the shadowed underbelly of Los Angeles, Roy Dillon, a small-time crook with a knack for the grift, finds himself on the receiving end of a baseball bat when a con goes awry. Simultaneously, Roy's estranged mother, Lilly Dillon, works miles away in La Jolla, manipulating the odds for the intimidating bookmaker, Bobo Justus, while secretly siphoning off funds for herself. When a horse race draws Lilly back to Los Angeles after eight long years, she discovers her son clinging to life in the aftermath of his failed swindle. As an experienced grifter, Lilly swiftly recognizes the deceitful charm of Roy's girlfriend, Myra Langtry. Myra, a seductive con artist, sees in Roy not a lover but a potential partner in a grand scheme to hoodwink the city's wealthy elite. However, a disturbing revelation about Lilly's dealings with Bobo's money throws the trio into a tailspin. As Lilly grapples with the unfamiliar stirrings of maternal concern, her own cons begin to unravel, exposing the brutal realities of the grifter's lifestyle. Simultaneously, Roy's rejection of Myra's offer sets off a chain reaction of greed, betrayal, and desperation.
